The term Aesthetic Dentistry refers to all the procedures that aim to maintain or improve the look and function of our smile.
Classic dentistry focuses on the therapeutic effect with little regard for the final aesthetics. Cosmetic Dentistry combines the therapeutic effect with maintaining or improving the appearance of the patient’s teeth.
We can classify Cosmetic Dentistry techniques in the following categories:
Tooth whitening is a popular aesthetic technique that improves the colour of the teeth.
Whitening can only change the colour of the teeth, while restorations such as implants or crowns remain unaffected by colour. In addition, the shape, size or position of the teeth are not affected. Therefore, it is a suitable method for teeth that do not have extensive restorations in the anterior teeth and are relatively straight.
Gum plastic surgery is a method of aesthetic dentistry by which the contour of the gums is redesigned. This method is applied to patients with short teeth (elongation of the mice) or to patients with a strong gummy smile.
The bonding method is the most modern technique of aesthetic dentistry by which we can change the colour, size and shape of the teeth and achieve a symmetrical, beautiful and white smile. It is a very widespread method because it combines speed, efficiency and low cost.
Bonding is the ideal method for patients who have a small or moderate orthodontic problem and do not want to undergo orthodontic treatment.
In some cases of some slightly pointed or crooked teeth, we can achieve amazing improvement simply by changing the shape of the cutting edge with the contouring method. The process is simple, completely painless and takes just a few minutes.
Sometimes we can combine the bonding method in the upper teeth with the contouring method in the lower teeth, thus achieving excellent aesthetic results with minimal interference.
The porcelain veneers are extremely thin ceramic sheets that are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth. They are used to correct aesthetic defects in the shape, colour, size and position of the teeth.
With porcelain veneers we can face aesthetic problems that are difficult to deal with bonding. The alternative way of dealing with these imperfections is to cover the teeth with crowns that require more grinding.
In some cases where front teeth destruction is quite large, bonding and porcelain veneers are not solutions because they require a sufficient amount of tooth. In these cases or when there are missing anterior teeth, which for some reason have not been implanted, the construction of crowns or bridges is the appropriate solution.
